STORNOWAY DINGHY DESIGNS & PLANS
UP TO 13' LENGTH

We have 2 designs up to 13' but we have now added 2 new designs - the Stornoway 14' and 16'
- see the GP Dinghies over 13' page
.

Note - In the particulars for each design, the dry weight is given for guidance only and will vary depending on the grade/density of plywood and solid wood used - different thicknesses of ply are often used by builders and the dry weight figure is based on the thinnest ply specified.
Also the Guidance Use comments are given in good faith and are based on feedback from previous builders etc and based on standard weight adults - contact us if you want further clarification before ordering/building. E & OE

STORNOWAY 9

Stornoway 9

The Stornoway 9 is the first of a new class of dinghies which incorporate firm bilges and moderately full transoms needed to carry loads safely and to give good sailing qualities without dragging a large transom through the water.

The plank shapes have been computer generated for simple stitch and epoxy construction and to make her eye sweet, she has 5 planks per side in addition to a narrow hog plank which greatly simplifies construction. She uses 3 sheets of 6mm ply for her hull and the sail rig can be added later. The bow shape can be modified to suit but a traditional stem shape is shown on the drawings.

LOD 9’1‘‘(2.77m); Beam 4’2‘‘(1.26m); Draft 6’’/2’6‘‘(.16/.76m); Sail Area 43 sq.ft(4 sq.m); Approx wht. 90 lb(41kg).

The example left is by Roger Bannister
The example right is by John Mules and is being sailed on the Norfolk Broads.

Below is an example by Dave and Jaja Martin.

STORNOWAY 12
Stornoway 12
Second in what will become a classic range of craft is the Stornoway 12. She has 6 planks per side giving her a lovely round hull. The standard drawings give the plank shapes for stitch and epoxy construction but as with all our designs, we can furnish the builder with mould shapes for clinker/ ply or strip planked construction. The stitch and epoxy method is definitely the quicker and easier method and will produce a strong lightweight hull.We have given her a high peaked gaff rig which keeps the spar lengths down and which will not twist off at the head in the same way as the lower peaked gaff rig.

She has plenty of internal space with side benches and she can be built as either a rowing or a rowing/sailing craft and would be ideal for family sailing. She will take the sprit or alternative lug rigs of the Highlander 12 and could be fitted out with a fore deck area.

LOA 12’1’’ (3.67m); Beam 5’ (1.53m); Draft 6’’/3’3’’ (.16/1.0m); Sail Area 78 sq.ft. (7.3 sq.m); Approx. wht. 135 lbs (61 kg).

Note - the plans now include details for a gaff cutter rig with bowsprit.

These 2 pictures above are of a clinker/ply version by Adam Beard and the one below is by Cormack O'Conner.

Below  - the Stornoway 12 with it's gaff cutter rig.

Left - details for a balanced lug rig with 7.3 sq.m. (78 sq.ft) sail are now included with the design package.
Below is a clinker example by Lorenzo Brignone - he has used a daggerboard rather than the pivoting centreplate and increased the freeboard by 60mm by widening the top 2 strakes - Lorenzo says "the boat is really fun to sail, motor and row".
Below are two photos of a strip planked version by Stewart Brannan with lug rig.
