CONSTRUCTING THE 14' MORNING TIDE

The Balsa frame components - note that the Datum WL is marked on all pieces.
The frames slotted onto the backbone and the transom glued in place.
The stringers are laminated from 4 pieces of 3x3mm Balsa.
The stringers viewed from astern.
Planking starts with the topside - once the glue has cured the lower edge is beveled ready to accept the next plank except towards the bow where, due to the very shallow angle of the planking, a rebate is cut into the lower edge so that the next plank fits neatly into the rebate flush with the topside plank.
Note how the planking at the bow is put on in narrow vertical pieces.
The planking finished and sanded.
....and from astern.
The cabin front has been added (along with the fore deck beam).
The cabin roof has camber and slopes forward and so needs to be planked - I've used 15mm wide planks starting at the centre. You can see that the sunk fore deck has already been added.
There is another view of the cabin top first plank which also shows that the cockpit side benches and sole have also been added. This is going to be a simple static model but you can see that there is plenty of internal space for radio gear etc for those wanting to make a working model.
The cabin top is planked with the planks held down by pins and tape - none of the planks needed tapering and were just parallel sided.
Toe-rail and companion hatch have been added to the cabin and the rubbing strakes added to the hull.
Finally, the mast tabernacle is made and fitted along with the keel - this has a slot in it to take a false ballast keel extension to make her into a working model sometime in the future - the plans give details for a suggested ballast keel plus notes on sail controls for a radio controlled version.
