MOTOR BOAT DESIGNS & PLANS
FOR CLASSIC MOTOR BOATS

Study Plans are available for these designs - remember a study plan gives you more details and a wood materials list usually on two A1 sheets, so that you can cost out a project before ordering the full plans. When you order the full construction plans you do not need to order the study plan as well, as all the study details are on the full plans.

We have12 classic designs, ranging in type from Slipper Launches to Runabouts and Motor yachts.

Note - In the particulars for each design, the dry weight is given for guidance only and will vary depending on the grade/density of plywood and solid wood used - different thicknesses of ply are often used by builders and the dry weight figure is based on the thinnest ply specified.
Also the Guidance Use comments are given in good faith and are based on feedback from previous builders etc and based on standard weight adults - contact us if you want further clarification before ordering/building.
Speed and power requirements are also based on feedback and estimates and are for guidance only - actual speeds attained will depend on loading etc.

15'4" FANNY THE FANTAIL LAUNCH
We were asked to design "Fanny" for the Boatman magazine and the construction of her hull was covered in issues 30 to 37. Since then several have been built both in plywood and in steel (by Peter Nicholls Steel Yachtbuilders). She was originally based upon our successful ROSE 'V' bottomed launch which has a large carrying capacity and enough volume for steam, electric or diesel engine propulsion. The drawings give details for Fanny to be built as an open launch or with a closed wheelhouse.
The original requirement was for a tough, robust single chine 'V' bottomed launch that could be stored in the average domestic garage but still have the capacity to carry up to 6 or 8 crew. She had to have sweet lines, the ability to be adapted for different roles and ease in construction. Construction is based upon a simple framework of ply frames/bulkheads, ply fore/aft girders and stringers which is then clad in a ply hull skin. The frames define most of the fit-out so that, on turning her over, fit-out time is minimal.  LOD 15'4" (4.68m); Beam 6'3" (1.91m); Draught 1'8" (0.51m); Approx. wht. 1455 lbs (660 kg). More photos of her can be found on the Steam & Electric Launch page.

Below are photos of an example by Peter Dalby with his own cuddy/cabin - she is powered by a Yanmar 1GM10 with a 14" x 8" 3 bladed prop.

16' EGRET RUNABOUT
The Egret is a slightly simplified form of the Classic runabout - she has a plywood hull which can be overlaid with Mahogany veneer and teak decking to give a classic look. She has tumblehome aft and a 'V' bottomed hull with a single chine built over a computer faired framework. An outboard engine can be used but the plans show an inboard of around 20 hp. Seating is for 4 or 5 in two cockpits. LOA 16' (4.88m); Beam 6'1 1/2" (1.87m); Draft 1'7 1/2" (0.50m); Approx. wht 950 lb (431 kg).

16' BOURNE RUNABOUT
The 16' Bourne runabout is partly based on the Egret but with a forward raking transom and a fair amount of tumblehome in the aft quarters. She uses the same ply skin over a slotted together ply framework but the tumblehome area is planked using diagonal layers of plywood. The hull can be veneered to simulate planking or left as a plywood hull. There is also no reason why she could not be strip planked too.
Initially she is set up to use a Torquedo 2 electric outboard in a well but she should also take an inboard electric motor and a conventional rudder system. Seating is for 6.

NEW 16' WINDSOR SLIPPER LAUNCH
The 16' Windsor is based on the original 16' Henley. I was asked in the early 90's to remodel the Henley with a 'V' bottomed hull shape and the modified hull panel shapes were originally given as an option to the Henley plans. Now I have drawn a full set of plans for this version and renamed it the Windsor 16.

The drawings give details for a forward seating bench with aft side benches for up to 6 people but she can be fitted out in a number of ways for instance with forward whicker chairs and aft seats.

Construction uses 6mm ply hull panels using either the stitch and tape or ply plank over frame methods.

NEW  18' HENLEY SLIPPER LAUNCH
The first Henley 18 by Geoff Shallard.
.....and complete.
The plans for the 16’ Henley Slipper Launch include the hull panel shapes for a single chine “V” bottomed version and we were simply asked to take this model and stretch it to 18’ - however, instead of just developing the hull panels, we have completed a complete separate set of plans for this new 18’ version which is powered in the same low cost way by an outboard in a well aft. She has the length though to take an inboard engine if required.

The interior has the same forward double bench seat and aft side seats but this can be altered to suit.Construction uses either ply over frame or stitch and tape construction and requires 9 sheets of 6mm ply and 9 sheets of 9mm ply.

18' RED SHRIKE RUNABOUT

Designed along the lines of a traditional 1930's runabout with rounded tumblehome to the topsides at the transom, the drawings detail her for construction using computer generated frames/bulkheads, transom and stem. Ribbands are then slotted into the frames and the planking (which may have a ply inner skin) is applied with the ribbands behind the seams. Decking consists of teak strips over ply so that in all respects she has a traditional appearance but uses modern building methods. She has room and strength to carry an engine of up to 125 hp.

Below is Peter Myers beautiful example.

21' TARANTO RUNABOUT
We have often been asked about the design of a more rakish runabout - built in much the same way as the Redshrike (a ply inner skin over frames covered with Mahogany veneer) but with more modern lines - and at last we have been asked to design one. This example has a length of 21’3” (6.5m), and a beam of 6’7” (2m). Weight is approx. 3000lbs (1361kg) depending on the engine used - engines up to 175hp may be used.

20'/22' KENNET SLIPPER LAUNCH
The Kennet can be built either as a 20’ or a 22’slipper launch details and panel shapes are given on the plans for both versions. She has a ‘V’ bottom forward which flattens out as it runs aft giving an easily driven hull shape which has plenty of grip on the water. The standard arrangement has 2 cockpits with comfortable seating for 4 or 5 people. Details of engine installation based upon a Yanmar 20 hp engine are shown on the drawings along with details on how to make your own rudder but we would be pleased to advise on the installation of other units.
Construction can either be by the ply on frame method using oversized hull panels which are fixed to a conventional framework or by the stitch and epoxy method using pre-shaped ply hull panel shapes. The launch can be fitted out in basic form, or she may be used as the basis for an extensively furnished craft with teak decks etc.,
Below is a Kennet being beautifully built by Greg Clapp in Australia - and finally launched.

NEW 25' WINDSOR SLIPPER LAUNCH
For the Windsor slipper launch we have used the ply over frame method of construction using a modern framework of ply bulkheads and frames partly linked by fore and aft ply girders all set up to make sure that the builder starts with an accurate base on which to fit chine strangers and then the ply planking. There is no reason why she could not be built using the stitch and tape method and we can develop the hull panel shapes for this which would use the same framework used for the ply over frame method.
The hull could also be planked conventionally or Mahogany veneers can be put over the ply inner skin for those who want a varnish finish. Thin strips of Teak are applied over a ply under deck so that she can look like an original Thames slipper.
The cockpit is open and seating can be arranged to suit individual requirements or a fixed bench front seat can be fitted dividing the cockpit into two.
For simplicity the drawings show power delivered by a 2/5KW electric drive pod making installation very simple but for those wanting a more conventional inboard diesel arrangement we also give the engine installation drawings from the Kennet slipper launch for guidance.
Right is the framework for a scale model built from the Windsor 25 plans for the full-size boat by Tim Rigg.

New - plans to make a model of the Windsor 25
There are now plans available for a 20" (510mm) working scale model of the Windsor 25 slipper launch design for Balsa or thin ply construction fitted with radio control - go to SF Design Models for details.

24'6" SNIPE RUNABOUT
This was an interesting way to start a design. The client had a couple of Super Snipe engines kicking about and he wanted to sell them. What better way to do it and to get the greatest return for his money than to package them. The package that we chose was a 1930’s style runabout similar to the old Hackers and Chris Craft, but instead of using traditional methods of construction, we have made things easy and quick by using stitch and epoxy methods throughout with pre-shaped ply frames, girders and hull panels. The frames and girders are simply slotted together. The standard arrangement has a forward control cockpit with bench seat with a large aft seating cockpit. 24' ORWELL COMMUTER LAUNCH
Below, the first Orwell under construction by Lukas van Helden

A slightly modern 'take' on a classic type of launch - many built in the mid 20th Century were much larger so this is a mini version. Half the launch is outside seating in an open cockpit and half is simple accommodation in the form of a couple of bunks/seats, and space for a small galley and wc. The hull shape has a classic 'tumblehome' aft with 'flare' in the topsides towards the bow.

Construction is strip planking over moulds with the bulkheads used as 'permanent' moulds on the building jig. she will jog along happily with a 35hp engine but can take up to 60 or 70 hp.

24' STRIP PLANKED MOTOR YACHT
This was a commission just for the computer generated and faired mould shapes and building jig details for a 24' x 8'6" motor yacht of traditional appearance. The concept is to have a forward cabin with 2 berths plus wc and galley and either a short wheelhouse with large aft cockpit or a longer wheelhouse with dinette. All the details are shown for the set up of the building jig ready for strip planking and we can either advise on the hull and deck/cabin construction or we can draw up details. Likewise, we can either give the machinery/rudder details from one of our other similar sized designs or we can draw up details for these.

50'/60' PINTAIL MOTOR YACHTS
We have construction details for the hulls only of two 1930's style motor yachts. The first, shown above has a LOD of 60' (18.3m), beam of 13'11" (4.24m), draft of 3'8" (1.10m) and displacement of 30 tons (30.4 tonnes) and uses a simple form of ply construction. This is based upon a central ply girder and ply bulkheads. The side planking is ply which may be pre-shaped. The bottom is arched and made up from 3 layers of ply and the round bilge is strip planked in the same way as our 23'5" East Coast Lugger.

The second example has an LOD of 50' (15.25m); beam of 11' (3.36m) and a draft of 3'7" (1.09m). The hull in this case is constructed of steel and has a similar layout to that of the 60 footer. For an overview, the G.A. drawing of each yacht plus the hull construction drawing costs £25 each.

Hull construction details cost £325 for the 50' yacht and £375 for the 60' yacht. We can draw up details for deck, superstructure, internal fit-out, machinery installation etc for each yacht as required.

Note - also see the 38'6" Linnet  - additional set of details for a deckhouse "Flat Top" version - go to Steam over 30'.
